Project Features:
1. Located in southern Nigeria, the camp sits in a typical tropical rainforest zone with year-round high temperatures, heavy rainfall and extremely high humidity. Chengdong’s modular box buildings are engineered specifically for these climate pain points, featuring enhanced moisture and leakage control, anti‑corrosion and pest resistance, stable temperature and humidity performance, and improved resistance to strong winds and waterlogging.
2. The project has a large overall footprint of 100,199 m². Within this area, Chengdong supplied 4,392 modular box units with a total building area of 81,014 m², complemented by extended-length and increased-height modules as well as H‑steel structures to meet different functional and span requirements.
3. The camp provides a full set of facilities, including offices, accommodation, canteens, leisure and recreation spaces, medical and first‑aid buildings and other multi‑scenario functional areas, all delivered with coordinated interior and exterior finishes.
4. Since commissioning, the camp's quality and operational performance have been highly recognized by the client and main contractor, establishing this project as an internal benchmark for large‑scale modular camps with a "zero‑complaint" record.
Set in southern Nigeria’s tropical rainforest belt, this large-scale workers’ camp is a representative oil & gas modular construction project, supporting an LNG-related development and providing integrated living and working spaces for several thousand staff.
Factory-prefabricated modular box units and steel structures were combined to achieve rapid deployment, consistent quality and reliable performance under year-round high temperatures, heavy rainfall and high humidity.
The development forms part of a major LNG train project in Bonny, Nigeria, where the owner and EPC contractor required a high-capacity camp close to the process area to improve productivity and safety. Key objectives included providing comfortable accommodation and workspaces for a multinational workforce, ensuring compliance with QHSE requirements, and minimizing schedule risks caused by the challenging climate and remote location.
Located in a coastal zone of southern Nigeria, the site is exposed to a typical tropical rainforest climate with persistent heat, high UV exposure, frequent storms and extremely high air humidity.
These conditions accelerate corrosion of traditional structures, increase the risk of water ingress and condensation, and make conventional on-site construction more difficult, especially during peak rainy seasons.
The total site area reaches approximately 100,199 m², allowing for clear zoning of accommodation, operations and supporting facilities while maintaining safe separation from the main process units. Within this footprint, Chengdong supplied 4,392 modular box units with a total building area of about 81,014 m², supplemented by extended and heightened modules as well as H-steel structures for larger-span buildings and public facilities.
The camp is planned around the daily routines of oil and gas construction and operations personnel, with logical traffic and people flows between accommodation, offices, canteens and site access points.
Core zones include office and administration buildings, single and double accommodation blocks, canteens and kitchens, medical and first-aid facilities, prayer and multi-faith spaces, as well as leisure, fitness and outdoor recreation areas.
Standard modular box units provide the main building blocks for bedrooms, offices and small meeting rooms, while combined modules form larger spaces such as open-plan offices, canteens and briefing rooms.
Extended-length and increased-height modules are used where additional clear height or wider internal spans are required, and H-steel structures support facilities with higher occupancy or special functional requirements.
In this oil & gas modular construction camp, the building system is designed to meet both structural performance and operational requirements of large EPC projects in remote areas.
By integrating modular prefabrication with tailored camp planning, the solution reduces on-site complexity, provides predictable quality across thousands of units, and creates a scalable framework that can be adjusted to different project phases and workforce sizes.
To cope with hot, humid and rainy conditions, the camp’s building envelope focuses on moisture control, rainwater management, corrosion protection and stable temperature performance.
Optimized roof and wall build-ups, reinforced waterproofing details, appropriate overhangs and shading, as well as anti-corrosion treatment of main steel components help reduce risks of leakage, mold growth and premature material degradation.
Interior layouts are designed to create a clear separation between work, rest and leisure, giving workers predictable and comfortable daily routines despite the remote location.
Reasonable room sizes, adequate storage, functional sanitary facilities, suitable lighting and ventilation, and well-planned communal areas contribute to better rest quality and overall well-being for long-stay personnel.
A large proportion of structural work, enclosure fabrication and basic interior fit-out was completed in Chengdong’s factories, with modules shipped to site for installation in a controlled sequence.
On site, construction activities focused on foundation preparation, lifting, connection and commissioning, which reduced exposure to adverse weather, improved safety and helped the EPC team align camp delivery with critical path milestones of the LNG project.
The modular design supports efficient maintenance through standardized components, clear access routes for inspection, and repeatable building types across the camp.
During operation, the camp achieved stable performance in terms of building integrity, functionality and service response, receiving strong recognition from the client and main contractor and being regarded internally as a zero-complaint large camp reference.
